The state of Maine provides the following classes of crimes, fines and penalties under the law:
MURDER – 25 Years to life in prison

CLASS B FELONY – like aggravated assault, means prison for up to 10 years and a $20,000 fine
CLASS C FELONY – or a theft crime of over $1,000, may be punishable by 5 years in jail and a $5,000 fine
CLASS D MISDEMEANORS – are usually theft of between $500 and $1,000, and other lesser criminal offenses that are punishable by less than a year in jail and less than a $2,000 fine
CLASS E MISDEMEANORS – are theft crimes of under $500, and other lesser criminal offenses that carry a jail sentence of less than 6 months and a fine of under $1,000
